Metro Select League
(Tier 2)
Attention: All U13
– U18 Players (1999 – 1994) who are currently playing in the Boys Select or
Girls Metro Leagues
There is
still some confusion regarding the new High Performance League / HPL (Tier 1),
Metro Select League (Tier 2), and the Gold League (Tier 3). This document attempts
to clarify the options available to our players.
Leagues:
The HPL or
BC Soccer Premier League (BCSPL) was created in January 2011 to form a viable,
top-flight league for player development in British Columbia. Eight founding
franchises have been approved. The Burnaby / North Shore franchise, where our
top North Shore District players would naturally flow upward to, is Mountain
United Football Club. This Club is a separate entity, and is not directly affiliated
with any of the North Shore or Burnaby soccer clubs.
The Metro
Select League (MSL) is the new Tier 2 league, created as the result of the
merger of the boys Selects League and the girls Metro League. Programming and
Team entry to these Leagues has traditionally been run at the District level, for
us, the North Shore Youth Soccer Association (NSYSA).
Gold (Tier
3) is the Level immediately below Metro Select. Gold,
Silver, Bronze, and House team programming and team formation, is organized and
run by our member Clubs - Bowen,
North Shore Girls, North Van Boys, Pemberton, Squamish, Sunshine Coast , West
Van, and Whistler. This remains unchanged this year.
Programs and Team Formation:
Our Metro
Select teams will not be District run programs this year. The teams will be
based upon where the players originate from. For example, a WVSC team will be
made up of primarily West Van-based players and a NVFC (Boys) or NSGSC (Girls) team
will be made up of primarily North Van-based players. District players from the
other member Clubs, will have equal opportunity to be selected for an MSL /
Tier 2 team, and will be placed on a team based on positional needs and geographic
logistics.
Up until
now, the Metro Select League has told Districts that there can only be one
team per District at each age group that is guaranteed a spot in the
league.
However,
the Clubs / District are now pushing back, and recent events have led us to
believe that we will be allowed to enter two teams per age group for boys and
girls. (i.e. two Boys U15 and two Girls U15 teams etc.) District Chairs will
vote on this issue towards the end of April / beginning of May.
In the
meantime, MSL tryouts are scheduled to begin in early April. The NSYSA has
given the Clubs permission to proceed with the formation of two Club-based
teams. In other words, where there is sufficient talent at an age group to put
together two teams, we will do so.
We are not
100% certain at this point that we will achieve our goal of two teams per age
group for both boys and girls. It is felt, though, that it’s better to proceed
this way, rather than forming a single team, and then told that we can have two
teams after MSL tryouts have concluded.
The teams
formed from these upcoming tryouts will have Club-appointed coaches. These
coaches may be selected from former Metro or Gold team coaching staff, Academy
staff or the Clubs’ professional staff.
Metro Select Tryout Registration:
To register
for our Metro Select Tryouts go to one of the following Club websites, look for
MSL / Tier 2 Tryouts and register. These MSL / Tier 2 Tryouts are held jointly
for NSYSA member clubs and the fee is $30. Tryout dates are also listed on
these Club websites.
It is
strongly recommended that all U13 – U18 (1999 – 1994) players who played Gold, Select,
or Metro last year, register and attend these evaluation sessions. Other
players who feel that they are capable of playing at the Tier 2 level are also
welcome to attend. Please ensure that you are willing to commit to: - 2
to 3 training sessions per week
- travel
to games in the 9 District League including Surrey, Pitt Meadows, Abbotsford,
Chilliwack, and possibly Vancouver Island
- a
season which can extend into late April with Cup play.
If you are
a former Gold, NSPPP, or DGMP player, in order for you to play at the level to
which you have become accustomed, you must
attend the MSL Tryouts.
Note: Players attending BCSPL Evaluations
should still register for the 2011 – 2012 soccer season with a North Shore Club
in case you are not selected for a BCSPL team. See your local Club website for
registration. When doing so choose to pay by cheque. If players are chosen for
a BCSPL team, your Club registration will be cancelled.
Players
chosen for Metro Select teams that have already paid for Club registration by
credit card will have that amount put towards their MSL registration fee.
To be safe ALL players, whether attending BCSPL or
MSL, or Club Gold tryouts, should register for the 2011-2012 season with their
local Club in addition to attending any evaluation sessions. This is to ensure they are eligible for Metro
Select and or Club Gold tryouts, and have a place to play no matter their final
selection.
Club-appointed
MSL coaches and Season Fee announcements will be sent out shortly.
NB. MSL /
Tier 2 Evaluations start at the beginning of April for some age groups, so be
sure to register on time.
